Great Public Interest Anticipated in Planning Committee’s Meeting on Hinkley Point Application

West Somerset Council's Planning Committee is meeting at 10am on Thursday, July 28, 2011, to consider EDF Energy's application, made through its subsidiary NNB Generation Company Limited, for site preparation works at Hinkley Point.
The meeting will be held in the Council Chamber at West Somerset House, Killick Way, Williton.
Because of the high level of public interest in this special interest major application, the Planning Authority is exercising its discretion and overseeing special arrangements for the meeting. This is to ensure Planning Committee members hear a range of representations from members of the community, organisations and other consultees.
The Council has received more than 500 letters and comments from its two rounds of public consultation. Written representations are given the same importance as verbal representations and all written representations are available to members of the Planning Committee prior to the meeting and will be summarised in the Officer's report to the committee.
It is anticipated that the Officer's report to the Planning Committee will be available on July 18.
In order to complete the committee process in an orderly and timely fashion, the number of public speakers on July 28 will necessarily be limited. Details of people and organisations wishing to speak will be noted. Speakers wishing to cover similar issues will be put in contact with each other to avoid duplication. This will ensure that the widest possible range of issues are put to the committee.
People wishing to register to request to speak at the Planning Committee meeting must contact the Council by noon on July 25, 2011, by phoning 01643 703704.

The council has limited capacity in its Council Chamber so among the special arrangements is a limited amount of additional seating. This is to accommodate speakers plus a limited number of spectators on a first-come, first-served basis on the day. Spectator seats cannot be pre-booked. It is anticipated that spectators will be limited to approximately 100 people.
The council discourages speakers and spectators from bringing hand luggage and other portable items to the meeting and alternative seating area. The council reserves the right to search hand baggage and other portable items being taken into the Chamber and alternative seating area.
