Mike & Jenny Braidwood
Local artist, keen environmentalist and Minehead resident, Alex Adams was the guest of honour for the opening of Porlock Bicycle Hire last Saturday (30th August). The new business to Porlock is the brainchild of Mike & Jenny Braidwood.
Although comparative newcomers to Somerset, Mike fell in love with Porlock in his youth, and returned for many holidays during the years. The couple met after the sad deaths of their respective partners, both after 37 years and when Mike introduced Jenny to Porlock they decided to retire to the village. However, retirement was put on the back burner when they noticed that the premises opposite their new home was not being taken up by a new business.
The new cycle hire business has taken over the premises vacated at the beginning of the year by Michaelmas Goose, and Alex Adams has transformed the interior with his trademark rural portraits.
For his speech to launch the new business Alex had collected messages from people and organisations throughout the area, all of which thanked Mike and Jenny for starting on this new venture and wishing them every success. Among the well-wishers were:
- Porlock Traders - for helping to stop Porlock becoming a ‘Ghost Town'.
- Visitors as well as residents - for providing the hire & repair services
- Near neighbours - for not opening a wet fish shop
- Alex himself - for choosing a business that is environmentally friendly
As he cut the ceremonial ribbon, speaking of his hosts Alex said: "they are not just environmentally friendly, but also what can be a rarity in this day & age a ‘genuine friendly couple'." He ended: "I only wish to say one more thing ... on yer bike!"
Richard & Jackie
Taking this as an invitation, Richard Growden - never one to hold back, sped off on one of the shop's tandems with his partner Jackie on the back seat.
