Porlock Vale Horticultural & Home Industries Society's Spring Show

Published: 21st March 2007 11:45

Report from the Secretary, Mrs Christine Fitzgerald

The bright Spring weather on March 14th was a perfect backdrop to Porlock Vale Horticultural & Home Industries Society's Spring Show. For once, the weather had been kind to gardeners for several days before the Show and most had reported that their blooms had reached the peak of perfection at exactly the right time - in stark contrast to last year when late wintry weather held the growing season back by 2 - 3 weeks.

There were an impressive total of 438 entries over all the classes, many from first time entrants, and the Porlock Village Hall was a blaze of spring colour. Several judges commented on the high standard of the entries and it was obvious that the large number of members of the public were equally impressed.

The Cookery section also produced a huge number of entries which made the prize selection extremely difficult for the hard pressed judge who just managed to finish in time to enjoy the delicious lunch cooked by new Committee member Mrs Kath Else.

The Committee were most impressed this year by the increase in the number of children's entries. The number of entries has been slowly declining over the years, but members of the Committee had visited Porlock School prior to the show to encourage the children to submit individual entries and this had proved very worthwhile. The Committee hopes to build on this revival of interest among the children year on year. The School curriculum work entry was, as always, of a very high standard and the judge had great difficulty in choosing the prize winners.

This year saw the retirement of the Society's long standing Secretary, Mrs Shirley Butler, who has organised the Shows for the past 14 years. Obviously Mrs Butler was pleased to offer help and support to the new team who hope to be able to build on Mrs Butler's past successes, but hers will be a very hard act to follow. The Society is very grateful for all the work she has put in over the years maintaining Porlock's record of successful shows.

The awards were presented by the Rev. Barry Priory.

The results of the show are as follows:
