RNLI Raft Fun Race (2007)

Summer arrived this weekend; not a day too soon, but there seemed a sense of a symbolic justice - as "the sun shines on the righteous" then surely the RNLI's annual fund-raising extravaganza is up there with the honourable and the good. But the well known quotation continues "... and unrighteous alike, the wealthy and their servants. The long-lived and those who just pass by briefly." So that covers the rest of us who celebrated the day.
From Ann Lang to Billy Taylor every generation can and does participate in the Blue Anchor to Minehead Raft Race, making the day the highlight of the year for Minehead.
Mrs Lang and young Billy are two of the numerous volunteers who cajole spare change from the crowds.

"The (RNLI) crew wanted to hold a minute's silence in respect for the young boy's family." Mathew Thresher, from Minehead Lifeboat Station
With only two days having passed since the tragic drowning of Sam Boyd, the majority of the crowd were in no doubt that we ignore the dangerous might of the sea at our peril.
After a minute's reflection in respect for Sam and his family, the fun race was underway led, in the first instance by The Royal Huntsman team who were soon overtaken by James Bosley's team.
The final winners of the fun race were the She Devils, 2nd place - Ross Cox, 3rd place - Sharks. A special mention to the Minehead Mermaids - who made it to the harbour in style.
