Minehead Triathlon 2007 Results

Published: 25th July 2007 11:15

Competitors from across the country lined up for the Minehead Triathlon last Sunday, 22 July. The contrary weather finally smiled on contestants, some of whom beaten the traffic chaos caused by motorway flooding, to take up the gruelling challenge.

Deputy Leader and Portfolio holder for staffing, Cllr Simon Stokes, said, "It was an excellent event and I'd like to thank all the competitors who braved bad weather in order to get here. Over 190 contestants made it which was great, given the conditions.

"Most of all, though, I'd like to thank all the marshals who volunteered their services at the end of last week following our appeal. Nearly 30 people generously came forward to save the day and make sure our guests could compete safely."

Competitors battled it out in male and female categories at junior, senior, veteran, super veteran, and vintage veteran classes, with all scores being totted up at the end to find the overall male and female winners. Competitors swam 400m in the pool, cycled 23k to Porlock and back, then ran 7.5k to Dunster Beach and back to the finish line on the common opposite Aquasplash.

Leisure Services Assistant Matt Steven, who organised the event, added, "The competitors were great, and even the weather smiled on us. I'd like to send my personal thanks to everyone who came through at the last minute to give up their Sunday morning to marshal as the triathlon could not have gone ahead without them."

"Thanks also to Janice Malarkey, Chris Miller and all the staff at the pool, Chris and Clare Bill, and Caroline Lewis, and a special big thank you to Chris Gibbs for all his hard work and time."
