Changes to Parking in West Somerset

Responsibility for Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE), which involves ensuring that drivers abide by on-street parking regulations, transferred from the police to Somerset County Council this week (June 11).

This brings enforcement of car parks and on-street regulations within the same procedures, and Somerset in line with most other local authorities in England and Wales.

Somerset County Council, and its enforcement service provider NSL, will issue penalty charge notices for motorists who break the on-street parking rules such as parking on double yellow lines or overstaying permitted parking times. The police remain responsible for vehicles causing obstruction or dangerous parking.

West Somerset Council has retained its own CPE service for enforcing the rules in the car parks it owns.

Cllr David Sanders, West Somerset Council's Lead Member for Economic Regeneration, said: "We will continue to set and collect parking fees from our car parks in the usual way and our officers will continue to wear West Somerset Council branded uniform in green, while on-street enforcement officers wear Somerset County Council-branded uniform in maroon."

The on-street metered car parking along Minehead seafront, and the station car park beside the Minehead terminus of the West Somerset Railway, has been returned to Somerset County Council, which will also enforce the rules in those areas.
