Unwelcome visits from Cold Callers
| Published: 25th June 2008 12:31 |

Several incidents have been reported where offers are being made to tarmac driveways. Some of these incidents may involve rogue traders who often pressurise householders into agreement by bullying, worrying or simply starting work. The work done is often poor, incomplete and / or unnecessary and prices charged for the work can be much higher than the original quote given.
It is important the police hear from anyone who feels they may have been targeted at the time to catch any potential offenders. The best way of avoiding such problems is by not dealing with anyone who calls at your home uninvited. Do not buy goods or services from people who make unsolicited calls to your door.
Police advice
- always use a reputable, local tradesman when possible.
- Talk to friends, family and neighbours and try and get a firm recommended to you.
- Always get three competitive quotes. Reputable tradesmen will have no problem in supplying you with a quote and full contact or billing details - not just a mobile phone number.
- And always check photographic ID.
- Never let anyone you are not entirely comfortable with into your home and don't feel embarrassed if you feel you need to make a phone call to ensure the caller is who they say they are.
