"Pumpkin carving and seed saving at Friends and Family Allotment "
The Friends and Family Allotment in Alcombe are holding an Open Day at the Allotment behind Harepark Terrace in Alcombe on Saturday 29th October. It will run from 11 to 3pm and include harvesting vegetables and saving seed followed by pumpkin carving and a free lunch of paella made with local produce. The allotment is run by Transition Minehead and Alcombe on behalf of the Living Well Programme and aims to promote the benefits of growing local fresh food. The allotment uses organic and permaculture methods.
Maureen Smith, of Transition Minehead and Alcombe says: "Growing food locally and with fewer chemicals is becoming increasingly important as food and transport costs rise.

"The skills needed have been passed on through the generations but have been sidelined in the recent past by chemical quick fixes. As these are based on petroleum, and therefore drastically increasing in price, a return to more natural methods is a good idea as well as the other benefits such as encouraging wildlife and avoiding pesticides in our food. ".
The allotment volunteers are also interested in food preserving and there will be jam and fruit "leather" to taste.
