Wellington Police Launched a Campaign
With the new school term now well on it's way, police in Wellington have launched a campaign this month to encourage local parents to work together with their children to reduce potential antisocial behaviour incidents in the town.
Officers are to carry out truancy sweeps in hot spot areas with support from staff at local secondary schools. Wellington officers have also put up a number of posters around the town asking the question 'Where is your child?' in a bid to encourage parents and guardians to think about the issues this presents.
Sergeant Stuart Bell said: "Over the summer months, the majority of the antisocial behaviour incidents involving young people coincided with the fact that their parents believed they were elsewhere."We understand that it can sometimes be difficult to know the whereabouts of teenage children, but being sure of where they are and who they're with may just reduce their chances of becoming a victim of crime - or even committing a crime themselves."
Wellington police are also running a number of diversionary initiatives to provide young people with fun activities that don't break the law. For example, some of the local children are involved in the Taunton Youth Paintball Project, where they are treated to a day of paint-balling at a low cost - but only if they stay out of trouble. Anyone who becomes involved with antisocial behaviour will be withdrawn from the project, so they have an incentive to behave.
Sergeant Bell added: "The paint-balling course teaches the youths about leadership, team work and the importance of sticking to the rules - whilst having a lot of fun at the same time! These are important life skills that we hope they will carry into their day to day activity."
