A pass-out parade for trainee firefighters hosted by the Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service takes place at the Service Training Centre in Plympton on Thursday (4 December)

Twenty-three trainees from Devon & Somerset, Cornwall, Dorset, Guernsey and West Sussex fire & rescue services are now ready to take their place at fire stations in their respective Services.

The two trainees from Devon & Somerset are Matthew Galpin, who will be joining Camel's Head Fire Station in Plymouth, and Sam Harding, who will be stationed in Bridgwater.

The pass-out parade is the culmination of a 13-week course which included training in the following areas:

  • Breathing Apparatus (including Fire Development Training)
  • Casualty and Trauma Care
  • Fire Safety
  • Fire Service equipment and Firefighting techniques
  • Hazardous Materials
  • Health & Safety ~ Level 2 Award H&S in the workplace
  • Incident Command System
  • Manual Handling
  • Positive Pressure Ventilation
  • Road Traffic Collisions
  • Safety at Height and Confined Spaces (SHACS)
  • Urban Search & Rescue
  • Water Safety

At the pass-out parade, the new trainees will be presented with their course certificates and the silver axe will be presented to the trainee who has consistently performed at a level above all others. The pass-out parade gives family, friends and senior officers from sponsoring Services and other VIP invited guests the opportunity to witness the achievements of the trainees and observe them demonstrating their newly acquired skills.
