Road Scheme Moves A Step Closer

Another piece of the Project Taunton jigsaw was put in place today when Somerset County Council provisionally received conditional planning permission for the construction of the Northern Inner Distributor Road scheme. Plans for the scheme will now go to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government for final approval.
The scheme will provide a new east-west route between Staplegrove Road and Priory Avenue, Taunton, providing relief to the congested areas of Greenway Road and Priorswood Road. The route will also provide access to significant areas of brown-field land for development.
Construction of the new road is planned to start in May 2010, with a scheduled completion date in Autumn 2011. Plans include an off-road cycle path along the length of the new road and the provision of safe pedestrian and cycle links. These include the building of a new footway and cycle bridge at Chip Lane to replace the existing and outdated ‘Forty Steps' bridge.
Cllr Hazel Prior-Sankey, Somerset County Council's Portfolio-Holder for Planning, Transport and Waste, said: "I am delighted that these plans have provisionally been given the go-ahead and would like to thank all those who have submitted their views as part of the consultation process. The scheme will contribute to the growth of Taunton's economy, whilst maintaining road safety and easing congestion."
