Day service staff from Somerset County Council's Learning Disabilties service have taken their qualification to another level by completing a Creative Activity Therapist (CAT) course to acquire skills to help dementia sufferers.
Around 25 staff, from eight day centres in the county, have completed the CAT course which provides skills required to develop stimulating, reminiscence based sessions for people who are developing dementia. The course is recognised by the National Open College Network (N.O.C.N.).
A presentation event will be attended by Jeremy Browne MP at Cheddon Fitzpaine Memorial Hall on Friday 21st November. Mr. Browne will give a short talk before presenting the certificates.
Lynn Stone, Network Manager for Day Services in Somerset, said: "Reminiscence Learning and Somerset County Council have forged a firm partnership to ensure that people across the county with learning disabilities and dementia have access to the skilled support they require. These staff members have worked hard to achieve this prestigious award."
Cllr. Justin Robinson, Somerset County Council's Portfolio holder for Health and Wellbeing, said: "I would like to congratulate the members of staff who have put so much work into gaining their certificates. I am sure that many people will benefit from their newly gained skills."
Presentation will be held at Cheddon Fitzpaine Memorial Hall on Friday 21st November.
