Awards for Making Somerset Accessible

Making life easier
In conjunction with ‘European Day of Disabled People', Somerset County Council has held the Accessible Somerset Awards, honouring those in the community who have raised awareness about accessibility issues for people with a disability.
Somerset County Council and the five District Councils joined together with Compass Disability Services for the Accessible Somerset Awards held on Wednesday, December 3. The awards recognise organisations that have made improvements in providing an excellent service, helping disabled people to shop, socialise and enjoy life to the full.

Overall there were 27 awards with each district being presented a certificate for the following categories:
- A place to eat;
- Accommodation;
- Attraction;
- Service.
Tropiquaria, Wildlife and Adventure Park in West Somerset, won the Young People's Winner category. They were nominated by two brothers who found the facilities easily accessible to everyone and believed that there is something for everyone at the facility.Double Gate Farm Bed & Breakfast from Godney near Wells were overall County Winners. They received over 20 nominations from people who praised the disability-friendly accommodation available as well as for being very obliging and helpful.

Winners were presented with silver framed certificates and crystal rose bowls by Somerset County Council Chairman, Alan Gloak, as well as District Council Chairmen and Richard Pitman of Compass Disability Services at an awards ceremony held today at the Old Municipal Buildings in Taunton.
Somerset County Council Chairman Alan Gloak, said: "There are countless people across Somerset working tirelessly to help make the county accessible for everyone in the community. These awards are a chance for us to commend the efforts of those organisations that meet the needs of people with a disability in our modern society. My congratulations go to everyone involved."
