Invited guests will skate under the stars with the stars, when professional ‘Dancing on Ice' skater Vicky Ogden and Olympic figure skater Robin Cousins officially launch the new Gardens of Light Festival at an exclusive preview on Friday November 15.
Commissioned by the Bournemouth Town Centre BID company, the Gardens of Light Festival will transform the Grade II listed Bournemouth Lower Gardens into a winter wonderland with innovative interactive lighting installations, an outdoor ice rink operated by Robin Cousins' company, Cousins Entertainment, and a Santa's Grotto. The winter attractions will be open to the general public from November 16 2013 to January 6 2014.
From 6pm at the exclusive preview event, Vicky, who was paired with funny man Joe Pasquale in the last series of the popular TV show, will demonstrate why she is nicknamed the ‘Fire Queen' with her dazzling fire and ice routine at the outdoor ice rink.
After skating for the very first time at Westover Road Ice Rink in Bournemouth, Robin went on to win the European Championships gold medal, and also the Winter Olympic Games gold medal in 1980. He will be at the launch to show his gold medal winning moves.
Renowned lighting designer Michael Grubb, who worked on the master plan for the London 2012 Olympic Park, will be on hand from 5.30pm to officially open his new Bournemouth Light Pods with help from children representing Wave 105 Cash for Kids charity.
There will also be a special guest appearance from Father Christmas, who will be giving guests a glimpse at his new grotto before it opens to the general public on Saturday November 16.
Lisa Tucker, chairman of the Town Centre BID Board, says: "At the launch we will be giving our guests a first look at the wonderful winter wonderland that Bournemouth town centre has in store to entertain everyone this Christmas. We are looking forward to welcoming two skating stars to Bournemouth to show us what can be done with our bigger and better ice rink!
"We will also be lighting up the Bournemouth Gardens with the magical installations designed by Michael Grubb, which have just been shortlisted for the 2014 Lighting Design Awards. The judges will be paying a visit to the Gardens of Light Festival to select their winner, which is very exciting news!"
