New Sports Facilities Hit The Ground Running

Published: 2nd September 2008 15:25

Pupils and staff at Court Fields Community School in Wellington will officially take delivery of a £1.9 million state-of-the-art sports hall and extended teaching area this week.

Somerset County Council has invested £1.6 million in the facilities, which will be handed over at a ceremony on the first day of the new term, 3 September. The remaining funding has come from the school's own budget.

Until now pupils have had to travel off-site to access sports facilities, but the new development will allow them to enjoy badminton, basketball, indoor tennis and cricket on their school doorstep.

The development also includes a conference room, storage space, physiotherapy and treatment rooms and new teaching spaces for pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN). The SEN spaces will replace those currently located in a temporary unit on site, which has now been demolished. Where possible, the construction has made use of sustainable technologies, incorporating solar panels and toilets flushed with rain-harvested water.

Court Fields Headteacher Elaine Faull said: "Having a Sports Hall has been one of our main priorities for the last 10 years.  Due to the dedication of Councillors, Governors, staff and students, we are delighted that funding was made possible from the Local Authority. We are proud of our new Sports Hall, Conference Centre and SEN facilities. Our students will benefit greatly from this facility and I am grateful to all those who have made it an excellent resource for students and the wider community."

Councillor Gloria Cawood, Somerset County Council's Portfolio Holder for Education, said: "Schools are about more than just their classrooms and these facilities represent a fantastic asset that will enhance the learning experience for generations of pupils to come. It has been wonderful to watch this project come to fruition."

Councillor Andrew Govier, Somerset County Councillor for Wellington, said: "This is one of my greatest achievements as a County Councillor. I have worked with the school for a number of years on this project and I am delighted that the building is now ready for the school to use. The facility will not only provide the school with a much needed sports hall but excellent SEN facilities. I am sure that existing pupils and future generations will derive great pleasure from it."
