St John Ambulance at YMCA Youth Groups

Junior and senior youth groups at Taunton YMCA on Lisieux Way are proud to have taken part in a training session with St John Ambulance.
Frances Wade from the charity has visited both groups to give practical instruction in first aid basics, that has seen some 20 young people come away with a certificate in recognition of their efforts.
Whilst Junior Youth Group learned how to make an area safe, assess a casualty for consciousness, place a casualty in the recovery position and call the emergency services, Senior Youth Group has added to this by also learning how to spot and treat shock, how to deal with an asthmas attack and what to do if someone is choking or is bleeding badly.
All the young people who attended the sessions have been presented with certificates and learned a great deal from Frances' visits.
'I learned lots of things I'd never realised before,' said James of the skills covered, and all participants should now have the best chance of dealing with an accident if they come across one.
The sessions were so successful that it is hoped Frances will come back in the spring to work further with the senior group. She was so impressed with their enthusiasm, attentiveness and willingness to get involved and to learn new skills that she hopes to increase their knowledge and skills by teaching them how to give CPR (cardio pulminary resuscitation) to a casualty who has stopped breathing.
The sessions are part of the YMCA's joint service of provision for Taunton's young people with Somerset County Council, Children and Young People's Directorate.
Photography and gardening projects are upcoming with lots of opportunity to gain practical knowledge and skills whilst having fun, getting exercise, meeting new people and (if you're very lucky!) winning a national Rotary competition.
