If you are blind or visually impaired then the Somerset Association for the Blind can help you. We are a local charity established in 1920. Based in Taunton we cover the whole of Somerset, providing services and activities, from Braille classes and craft groups to our social afternoons and our volunteer visitor service.
We support visually impaired people of all ages, helping them to continue to lead a full and independent life. Loneliness and isolation are huge problems facing those with a visual impairment. Loss of independence and social exclusion often follow a diagnosis of sight loss. To counteract these problems, SAB arranges social afternoons and a variety of activities and provides transport to enable visually impaired people to meet others and learn new skills.
At our centre in Northfield House in Taunton we have a shop selling aids to make life easier for the visually impaired. We stock the latest equipment ranging from lighting, kitchen and writing aids to clocks and watches. In partnership with Somerset County Council, we provide a volunteer visiting service to assist people in their homes, helping them with daily tasks to make their lives easier, such as paying bills, reading mail and shopping. Befriending by our volunteers is an important aspect of the work we do.
