Stanchester's Sports Day For Budding Paralympic Athletes

‘Have a go Day - Autumn Fling' sports day
Somerset County Council run Stanchester Sports Centre will be buzzing with activities when disabled sportsmen and women from across the South West take part in the ‘Have a go Day - Autumn Fling' sports day.
The annual event, is expected to attract around 100 competitors and has been organised in partnership with Yeovil College and the Somerset County Sports Association for the Disabled.
Competitors will take part in a wide range of activities including indoor wheelchair basketball, archery and table-tennis, and track and field events such as shot put and the javelin.
The Leisure Centre is able to host the event because of the excellent access and facilities it provides for disabled people. The Manager at the Centre, Cath Vigar says that the centre can cater for people with a wide range of disabilities: ‘We have a lift here, automatic entrance doors to make access easier and the competitors will also be able to try a great variety of sports activities at our gym, sports hall and tennis courts."
Chairman of the Somerset County Sports Association for the Disabled, Gill Matthews explains: ‘ The sports day is a fantastic opportunity for disabled people in Somerset to get involved and have fun in a relaxed atmosphere. You never know we may even spot a future Paralympic athlete at the event."
Cllr. Justin Robinson, Somerset County Council's Portfolio Holder for Health and Well-Being, said: "I am sure that the success of team GB at the recent Paralympic Games in Beijing will be an inspiration for many of the athletes taking part. Sporting activities are open to athletes of all abilities and this will be a great opportunity for everyone to meet and enjoy their experiences."
Local County Councillor for Martock, Doug Campbell, said: "Stanchester Leisure Centre offers excellent facilities for all. I am sure that everyone will enjoy the day."
The sports day at the Sports Centre, Stoke-sub-Hamdon will be held on Sunday 5th October.
