Crime PreventionThere have been a number of reports of pedal cycles being stolen recently.
Whatever type of bike you have, it is essential to keep it secure. Almost 400,000 bicycles are stolen every year in England and Wales but a few simple steps could help you minimise the risk of yours being one of them.
- Always lock your bike up when leaving it unattended, even if it is only for a few minutes.
- Try and choose somewhere where there are lots of people and a high level of natural surveillance
- If a purpose built cycle stand is not available choose a fixed piece of street furniture. Please be careful not to obstruct the way for others, such as wheelchair users, people with baby buggies or the visually impaired.
- Invest in an adequate lock. A chain and padlock combination is the cheapest option.
- Security mark your bike, keep a record of the frame number and take a photograph of it, so that if stolen and recovered it can easily be identified as yours.
