The public is being given the chance to peek behind the doors of some of Mendip's most treasured buildings.

Mendip District Council is encouraging everyone to enjoy the district's historic buildings as part of this year's Heritage Open Days, which takes place between September 11 and 14.

A number of historic Mendip buildings, which would not normally be open to the public, will open their doors for this special event which celebrates the district's heritage and culture.

Among those taking part this year are:

  • Pilton Tithe Barn, Pilton (Sunday, September 14, between 10am and 4pm) where the public have the chance to explore the magnificent 14th century medieval barn, which had close links to Glastonbury Abbey and has now been restored after its thatched roof was destroyed by lightning more than 40 years ago.
  • St Hugh's Chapel, Charterhouse (September 11 to 14, between 10am and 4pm) is one of the district's most intriguing chapels and was built in 1908. It is set on the picturesque Mendip Hills near to the Victorian lead-working remains at Charterhouse.
  • The Old Deanery, Wells (Saturday, September 13, between 10am and 4pm) is now used as the offices of the Bath and Wells Diocese. This grade one listed medieval building, which is also used for conferences, was visited by King Henry VII in the 15th century and is said to be haunted by the nephew of Sir Walter Raleigh.
  • Vicar's Hall and Treasury, Wells (Thursday, September 11, between 12pm and 6pm) is across the Cathedral Green and has remained unchanged since the 14th century. It gives a fascinating insight into where the choir men of Wells used to dine.

The open day venues are free to enter, and there is no need to book - just turn up and enjoy exploring.

Other buildings across the district are also taking part in the heritage open days, but many are organising their own events and opening times. To find out more please visit http://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/

Cllr John Osman, Mendip District Council's portfolio holder for regeneration, which includes conservation, said: "Mendip is so full of intriguing and fascinating heritage that an opportunity to look behind closed doors is a fantastic opportunity. We are extremely lucky to live in a district which has such a wealth of history.

"Heritage open days such as this are an ideal opportunity to learn more about historic buildings which normally aren't open to the public. Many of the historic buildings we have in Mendip make the district such a unique and fascinating place."

Apart from the national Heritage Open Days, other buildings and groups also hold their own open events throughout the year.
