Lee on his travels ( during his hypothetical midlife crisis)

Published: 6th July 2008 17:17

Welcome

I was asked by family and friends to document my travels. This blog is for you. Here are some of the places I'll be visiting over the next few months:

South America- Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, Galapagos Islands, Amazon Forest, Ecuador and Peru.

North America- Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and the Grand Canyon.

Australia- Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Great Barrier Reef and Ayers Rock.

Thailand- Bangkok and Koh Tao.

Life in Peru part 1- 4th July 2008

It´s really been a whirlwind last few days. Some of the highlights are listed below:

Flying over the Nazca Lines
One of the world´s great archaeological mysteries. The lines consist of patterns and pictures etched in the ground. The weather was perfect for seeing the Lines.
White water rafting near Arequipa
Again, a great experience but the water was so cold!
Sandboarding and buggee driving in Huacachina

I couldn't help but feel like I was in the Sahara Desert, or somewhere in the Middle East.Dunes shift, and I'm truly amazed that the tiny town isn't completely engulfed by a migrating mass of sand.

Colca Canyon

This is the second deepest canyon in the world (3,501m). It´s more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. Jaw dropping views followed by a 20K mountain bike.

There is still much more to do. In the days ahead I´ll be going to Machu Picchu and the Amazon. Watch this space!

P.S. More pictures to follow in due course.

The magical world of Galapogas

Yes, it was a long journey. I travelled for almost one day taking 3 flights (with 3 long security checks!). That really is the worst part about travelling. But it was to prove to be a small price to pay for an unforgettable trip.
The Galapagos Islands are located 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. It's made up of 13 large volcanic islands (and dozens of smaller ones). The Islands are famed for their amazing variety of wildlife and were the inspiration for Darwin's theory of evolution. The Islands are recognised as a wonder of the natural world.

Because the wildlife has no natural fear of humans you can get really close to them. And I mean really close (just look at the video I posted above). Nowhere else in the world can you have a staring contest with wild animals and lose.

I swam with stingrays (cautiously!), sharks (very cautiously!), sea lions, penguins and sea turtles. There were so many jaw dropping moments, from molten lava flows to the playful antics of sea lions.

I've taken hundreds  of pictures and it's no easy task selecting the best ones.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. I'm really enjoying South America and I've just got to Peru. Anyone for a Pisco Sour? For now-los mejores deseos.

P.S. Defamatory comments about my weight, man-bag, travel writing and my rather fetching Amazon proof sun hat may result in legal proceedings. My "expensive" lawyer is monitoring the situation from his office located in a hall of residence in Manchester. However, I will accept a beer as recompense.

P.P.S. I'm also available for weddings (if you need a photographer then please ask for a free quote).

Friday the thirteenth and that send off (13th June, 2008)

Thanks to all of you who came along for a few drinks (not exactly a few to be honest!). Thanks also for the good wishes, cards and presents. I've now added some photographs from the night.

Preparing to traverse this small planet..

They say the best travel writers are able to combine narrative with history, sociology and politics. But I don't promise to be one of them.

The preparation has been hard. First, I've had to spend lots of money. I've then had to get malaria tablets, give up drinking a six pack and get a six pack, get iodine drops (whatever they are) and buy a backpack. I've also had to endure various injections including one to minimise the after effects of being bitten by a rare monkey.

This blog will record my travel musings and very amateur photography skills. But I'll do my utmost to tell you about the wonders of the world, diving on the Great Barrier Reef, the messy late night stumblings into bars and, of course, this notion of about trying to find myself. You'll have a ringside seat and it's going to be amazing.
