MP's agreed the vote in 2006 and since then we've been told that the smoking ban is immminent but what exactly is in store for all Croydon's smokers? And where exactly will you be allowed to smoke?
Somking is allowed at home and in places treated as home even temporarily such as hotels, care homes, hospices and prisons.
Although smoking is allowed in homes if you employ a cleaner, builder, plumber or anyone else to come and work in your house you must adhere to the smoking ban.
Owners of public places such as pubs have to display correct signs and can be fined £2,500 if they don't stop customers from smoking.
Lorry cabs are counted as a workplace if it carries a driver, therefore smoking will be banned in it.
Smoking is still allowed in specialist tobacco shops so that customers can test the products.
The smoking law doesn't just apply to cigarettes, it also applies to pipes, cigars and herbal cigarettes.
