FAIRFIELD SET TO RECEIVE £300,000 FOR IMPROVEMENTS

FINANCIAL GO-AHEAD was confirmed at the cabinet meeting on 18 June.

As landlord of the popular entertainment venue, the council has both a keen interest and a responsibility to ensure Fairfield continues to be recognised as Croydon's premier centre for culture and arts.

Now, the council and Fairfield believe it is timely to invest in the venue's appearance and facilities with the council agreeing that Fairfield needs a facelift to ensure its amenities remain appealing to audiences.

The six figure sum will contribute to an ongoing works programme that will maintain Fairfield's star status while its long term future is determined. Further spending of £200,000 a year has been earmarked in each of the next two years, making a total council contribution of £700,000.

Said cabinet member for culture and sport, Councillor Steve Hollands: "This substantial level of ongoing investment in Fairfield shows our high regard for the venue and our determination that it should remain the borough's top venue for culture and arts. As Fairfield's landlords we want to ensure the building is kept in good repair and condition and looks smart and cared for - and as every home owner knows, this takes a lot of forward planning and expense.

"Our predecessors showed their consideration for Fairfield by withdrawing its grant. While the Government's inadequate funding means we cannot yet afford to restore this support, we believe that increasing the aid for the building itself demonstrates our own commitment to the venue and the independent charity which runs Fairfield."
