The Great No Smoking Day Challenge
|
Published: 10th March 2008 23:22 |
The campaign is the first since smokefree legislation was extended across the whole of the UK, and research shows millions of people pledging to take part. The Challenge invites smokers to commit to a smokefree week. Quitters then receive free quit packs, text messages and emails, building confidence, highlighting health benefits, and providing encouragement to go on to make a lifelong commitment.Another new development for 2008 sees participants encouraged to seek sponsorship to support a charity of their choice, either via a dedicated JustGiving web page or using the Challenge sponsorship form. Research suggests that quitters are more likely to succeed if they secure the support of family and friends.Celebrity support includes ex-housemate of Big Brother 7 Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace and TV doctors Dr Hilary Jones and Dr Rosemary Leonard.Dan Tickle, chief executive of the No Smoking Day charity, said: "It's great to celebrate our quarter century with such an exciting and innovative campaign. "Today's smokers are much more clued up on the risks of smoking than they were 25 years ago, and three quarters would like quit. So there's no point simply hammering home the same old messages in the same tired ways."But despite all the changes, there's one fact that hasn't changed: smoking remains the UK's number one cause of premature avoidable death."The charity has also embraced social networking and created a Facebook group - The Great No Smoking Day Challenge - encouraging quitters to use the support from the group. A My Space account has also been created with friends such as Lily Allen and Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace.To find out more visit the website by clicking here
