LANE COMPLETES RECYCLING HAT-TRICK

Published: 14th July 2007 21:49
A £170,000 facelift to Factory Lane reuse and recycling centre has just been completed. The new works, which significantly widen the range of recycled materials that can be left at the centre, will be viewed by shadow minister Francis Maude on Thursday 12 July.
Installation of new compactors for general waste means Croydon Council has been able to extend the space for containers dedicated to recycled materials. So anyone wanting to ensure their obsolete electrical equipment, TVs and monitors, cartons and tools can be stripped and used again now has a clearly identified container to aim for.
The council expects the improvements will lift the centre's recycling rate to 50% from 35% at present. When word gets around the volume of recycled waste is expected to climb still higher. This optimism is based on increased usage of Fishers Farm in New Addington and Purley Oaks where revamped reuse and recycling centres have already been launched.
Mr Maude will be shown around the site by cabinet member for environment and highways, Councillor Phil Thomas in the presence of council leader Mike Fisher and local ward members. Opposition spokesperson, Councillor Alison Butler has also been invited.
Said Councillor Thomas: "Residents are gradually getting used to the fact that they no longer go to the local dump to get rid of their rubbish. In response to what people have said they want, we're making it easier for them to recycle. As a result, they're almost literally queuing up to take advantage of the new facilities we're providing. This is really encouraging and means we're closing in on our target of our next target to recycle around a third of the borough's waste."
