BOROUGH RECYCLING SCHEME EXTENDED

Croydon Council had originally planned an extension of the scheme to 24,000 households but a review of the proposals revealed the number could be increased within existing budgets.
The kerbside collection of plastics and cardboard - in addition to paper, cans, glass and textiles - is already undertaken from 12,000 properties in parts of Waddon, Norbury, Addiscombe and Shirley.
The additional 36,000 properties will cover additional properties in those wards, and extend the service into Coulsdon East, Kenley, Sanderstead, South Norwood, Upper Norwood and parts of Ashburton.
Each of the affected households will be given an additional recycling box, and a new, split-bodied recycling collection vehicle will be used, allowing the new materials to be included in the existing fortnightly visits. Details of collection dates will be distributed to households over the coming weeks.
Councillor Phil Thomas, cabinet member for environment and highways, said the collection of plastic, cardboard and green waste across the whole borough over the next few years should see the recycling rate rise to 30% by 2010.
He said: "Recycling rates increased last year to a little over 20%, compared with only 16% the previous year.
"The increase in plastics and cardboard recycling, together with other recent new services - including estates recycling, green waste collections, and improvements at the borough's three reuse and recycling centres - should see recycling rates increase to over 23% this year.
"This has been achieved in no small part by the introduction of an enthusiastic new team of managers who have pushed through the changes already made and has lots of new ideas to help further improve Croydon's recycling levels and waste-management."
