Council Blitz on Wheelie Bins

Published: 1st May 2007 21:43

COUNCIL BLITZ ON WHEELIE BINS

Operations to clear the streets of hazardous bins and other material are making an immediate improvement to many streets in Sheffield.

Environmental improvement teams are now out every Saturday in areas with a history of bins being left out and accumulations of waste in gardens - particularly in traditional student areas, although not all offenders are students.

Residents have been complaining that bins were being left out for days and weeks in some areas after collections. These were causing a nuisance and were often knocked over at night causing noise and spilling their rubbish over the street.

People with buggies often have to step out into the road to get past these bins and blue bins left in the street mean people may be less likely to use them for recycling. Police officers from the Safer Neighbourhood Teams were keen to rid the streets of bins left out, as these can attract burglars and highlight student areas.

Ian Ashmore, Head of Environmental Regulation at Sheffield City Council advised: "This initiative is the latest in the Council's attempt to deliver a tougher response to people who deface their local environment. Over recent months enforcement officers have blitzed problem streets and delivered more than 500 warning letters and 184 legal notices formally requesting bins be returned to houses after collections. They also identified other problems in the streets.

"Now the first fixed penalty notice for a householder's bin has been sent to an address on Wiseton Road for ignoring previous warnings and persistently leaving a bin out in the street to the detriment of the community.

"Although the situation has improved greatly due to our tougher line, we expect this to be the first of many such fixed penalty notices we serve on the minority of residents who disregard our initial contacts."

The fixed penalty notice for wheelie bins persistently left on the street is £100 discounted to £60 if paid within 10 days.
