GRANTS FOR LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUPS

Sheffield City Council's Small Grants Fund continues to enhance the good work done by community groups across the city, by awarding over £16,000 to twelve separate groups in the latest round of applications.

Among the successful groups was the Parson Cross Community Development Forum who were awarded £2500 to run a sports academy for local children over the summer holidays. There will be 40 hours of fun sporting activities and over 200 children could benefit. The Forum will use the funds to employ specialist sports coaches plus a breakdance instructor and a martial arts instructor.

The Sharrow Festival Committee were awarded £1500 as a contribution towards performers for this year's festival including a Reggae band and a group specialising in classical Pakistani music.

Also successful were Darnall Homework Club, who received £1570 to continue valuable after school work with local children and Greenhill Park Bowling Club who received £3000 to provide facilities suitable for disabled bowlers.

The Council particularly welcomes applications from groups and organisations that benefit people living in the most deprived areas of the City and from organisations meeting the special welfare needs of: disabled people, including people with mental health problems and people with learning disabilities, disadvantaged children and young people, older people and people from black and ethnic minority communities. Small community groups with a maximum income of £100,000 can apply for up to £3,000.

Councillor Pat Midgley, Cabinet Advisor for Social Inclusion said: "The Council is working hard to close the gap between the most deprived areas of Sheffield and other parts of the city. All of the organisations we support aim to make a difference in their local communities by promoting community wellbeing and tackling disadvantage and discrimination."
