COUNCIL TO COMMIT £2.5 MILLION TO CRUCIBLE PROJECT
Sheffield Council's Cabinet is set to give a £2.5 million commitment towards the £15 million refurbishment of the city's famous Crucible Theatre over the next two years.
At their meeting on Wednesday (24 October) Cabinet members are expected to commit the Council to supporting the Sheffield Theatres Trust with the £2.5 million towards the redevelopment of the theatre.
Council Leader Jan Wilson commented: "It has been a tremendous achievement to pull together the £15 million funding package to enable this essential project to be carried out. We are grateful to all the partners who have supported this initiative, which will ensure we have a high-quality theatre in keeping with its reputation as one of the top venues in the country."
Angela Galvin, Chief Executive of Sheffield Theatres says: "We're very grateful to Sheffield City Council for their generous contribution towards our refurbishment programme. The Crucible holds such an important place in the hearts of many Sheffield residents and promotes the city to an international audience. With the city's continued support we are confident that The Next Stage will deliver an exciting theatre that Sheffield can really be proud of."
The main auditorium in the 36-year-old theatre is due to close at the end of this year, following on from its production of Amadeus, when a brand new thrust stage will be installed. The Studio Theatre will remain open until April and the theatre will continue to host the World Snooker Championships next year and in 2009. Sheffield Theatres Trust continues to meet a strict schedule for the refurbishment of the theatre, which is due to reopen in late 2009.
Other funding partners include the European Regional Development Fund and the Arts Council.
The Crucible is currently being considered for listing on account of its architectural importance and all plans for the building have been carefully drawn up with this in mind
