 Age Concern & Older Sheffield

Age Concern Sheffield has been providing support to Sheffield's over 50s through a variety of services for more than twenty years. This site will tell you what we currently offer and how we are working to improve the quality of life of thousands of older people across the city. Whether you're an older person yourself, caring for an older friend or relative, a professional working with older people or simply interested in the issues affecting older people, we hope you'll find the site interesting and useful. If you'd like more information about anything on these pages or have any other queries please do get in touch via the website.

Age Concern Sheffield is an independent, local organisation dedicated to supporting older people in Sheffield, particularly those who are vulnerable or isolated. We work to help older people in Sheffield to retain their independence and get the most out of life. We do this through a range of services ranging from one-to-one support in people's homes to information and advice. As a local organisation we are best placed to understand and respond to the needs of the people we exist to help but we're also part of a national federation of over 400 organisations who together can have a real impact on the national issues that affect us all.

Information & Advice Service

From our city centre location we provide advice and information, tailored to the needs of older people, on a wide range of subjects. Thanks to funding from the Big Lottery Fund, from June 2006 we are also able to provide a home visiting advice service, particularly focusing on helping vulnerable or house-bound older people to access the benefits to which they are entitled. Since May 2003 we have held the Community Legal Service's Quality Mark at general help level, in recognition of the high quality of the service.

Information Support Officers and our committed team of specially trained volunteers, assist thousands of people every year on issues ranging from healthcare to housing to problems with utility companies. This enables experienced advice staff to focus on specialist areas such as benefits, which now make up around 40% of our enquiries. We can provide benefits checks to ensure people are claiming their full entitlement, advice and assistance with disability benefits and support for people appealing against decisions not to award benefits.
