Friends of Charlton Brook

Friends of Charlton Brook (FOCB) are a newly formed enviromental group (October 2006) consisting of local people who aim to work with their community to restore Charlton Brook dam and its surrounding area to its former glory.
New members are very welcome, and are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities from litter picks to fund raising events - we have already removed several tons of rubbish from the area including bicycles, shopping trolleys, motorbikes and traffic cones.
Public green spaces improve the look of any area for everybody, they increase bio-diversity and counteract the effects of global warming. But these areas need to be cherished and sadly Charlton Brook needs care and attention, which has been lacking for many years.
Monthly meetings are held every first Wednesday at the Chapeltown College, Lound Side, 6.30pm
About Charlton Brook
Charlton Brook is a green lung within the area of High Green, Burncross and Chapeltown in North Sheffield. It consists of a brook set within a valley. At the top end is a dam, which is used for fishing and the enjoyment of wildlife. There are sections of woodland running along the majority of the site, some of which is ancient areas of meadow and short mown grass along with a play area at the bottom of the site.
The site is approximately 10.87 hectare in size, The brook is crossed by a number of footpaths going South to North and a couple of paths running the lengh of the site from East to West.
The creation of the dam is linked to the industrial and economic development in Sheffield. The dam was, and still is, a key feature in the identity of the area. Then as now, the Charlton Brook and dam acts as a focal point for the local community and provides a focus for their energies. FOCB are keen to capture any information on this area, whether it be historical records, oral history or photographic. If you have any information which you beleive may be relevant, we would love to hear from you.

Aims & Objectives
FOCB are currently working with the sheffield City Council Parks and Countryside and Enviromental Planning, The North area Panel, The Wildlife Trust and the Fisheries and Recreation technical team of the Enviroment Agency. we are hoping to work collaboratively with High Green based group Paces and local schools, engaging with children and young people.
We were recently awarded £250 from the Barnsley Building Scociety, part of their "Pride in the Community Grant" scheme and £50 from Morrisons, part of their CVS scheme. We are actively applying for further funding from other local and national organisations, as well as organising fund raising events, including race nights and car boot sales.
We aim to acheive:
- De-silting of the dam and stream.
- Improved Fishing facilities.
- Better footpaths and lighting to include disabled access.
- New seating, litter bins and dog bins.
- Regular refuse clearance.
- Improvement of BMX track and installation of robust childrens childrens's play area.
- Woodland management to extend the life of the tree cover and increase diversity of habtat.
