This means that smoking will not be allowed in the buildings or grounds of any of the hopitals or premises of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. this decision is in line with the government White paper "Choosing Health" & the "Guidance for smoke-free trusts"published by the Health Development Agency.
Smoking is the biggest cause of ill-health & premature death in the U.K. people that smoke are at a much higher risk of heart attack, circulation problems, bronchitis, emphysema & cancer of the lungs, mouth, throat, bladder cervix & pancreas. Smoking can be responsible for hair loss, cataracts, blindness, glue ear, gum disease, tooth loss, foul breath, pleurisy, asthma, premature ageing, wrinkling, osteoporosis, cellulite, impotence, fertility problems, ulcers, gangrene & amputation among other health problems.
Staff are being encouraged to join Smoking support drop-in sessions.
