Liver disease to rise with obesity levels
The UK is facing a significant increase in the number of people suffering from liver disease, according to a new study.
Increasing obesity levels and rising alcohol consumption will lead to more liver disease cases, according to charity the British Liver Trust (BLT).
High levels of alcohol consumption can lead to heightened risks of cirrhosis, fibrosis and liver cancer, while research reveals that obesity can bring on the onset of liver disease.
Alison Rogers, chief executive of the BLT, said: "While much of the recent increase in liver disease has been alcohol-related a major contributory factor is the nature and quantity of food we are eating.
"Liver disease is a silent killer. It does not show any symptoms until the liver is severely damaged."
She added: "Our unhealthy lifestyle is storing huge problems for the future."
