COUNCIL INVESTS IN RECYCLING BINS FOR SHEFFIELD
Sheffield City Council has emphasised its commitment to recycling with the announcement that segregated recycling bins are to be provided in the 12 main shopping centres across the city.
The announcement means that pupils from Hunters Bar Infant School will have their wishes granted. They had written to Councillor Sylvia Dunkley, the Cabinet member responsible for Streetscene, asking for the Council to provide more recycling bins similar to the one outside the Cathedral
The new bins now under order will have separate sections for cans, glass, plastic and general waste. The materials collected will be passed to the local re-processing organisation Reclaim for recycling.
Michelle Hughes, head teacher at Hunters Bar Infant School commented: "It's great news that the Council has listened to the suggestions from our pupils. They take the environment very seriously and this will encourage them to keep sending in their ideas to improve the local environment."
Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, the Council's Cabinet member for Climate Change and Local Environment added: "We have been told that local residents wanted local recycling facilities in their neighbourhoods and we have provided them in the main shopping centres where there are many food and drink outlets. We will be monitoring the usage of the bins closely to decide whether they should be extended to other locations to encourage people to think more about recycling."
He was also impressed with the environmental awareness of the Hunters Bar pupils and added: "I'm really pleased that these young people are taking such a keen interest in the environment. I know they have played an active part in the helping the school earn its Eco-School status. They are a great example to us all."
The bins are due for delivery in 3-4 weeks time and will be installed next month.
