NRQ MOVES CLOSER
Sheffield City Council is advising visitors to the city centre that the closure of Eyre Street Car Park is imminent.
Following the announcement that plans for the forthcoming Fire Station have been agreed, it is expected that developers will start on site in the coming weeks. The car park at Eyre Street will be closed permanently to make way for the new fire station as part of the New Retail Quarter works.
Councillor Bryan Lodge, Cabinet Member for Transport and Streetscene at Sheffield City Council said: "The closure is due in the coming weeks and we want to make sure that people who use this car park are aware in advance and can make alternative arrangements. Variable messaging systems on the entrances to the city will help direct motorists to the nearest available spaces for convenience as part of the South Yorkshire Intelligent Transport System (SYITS)."
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue expect to occupy the Eyre Street premises by August 2008. The Service's existing Wellington Street site will become an integral part of Sheffield's New Retail Quarter as the location of the new John Lewis flagship store.
Councillor Tim Rippon, Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration, Culture and Planning said: "Over the coming years we are going to see real changes to the city which will result in a whole new retail offering, putting us among the top ten retail destinations in the UK. This is the first step in realising the NRQ vision for the city. "
Creating a new retail heart for Sheffield, the New Retail Quarter will provide 860,000ft² of prime retail accommodation including a new 260,000ft² John Lewis department store. Construction of the NRQ is programmed to start in 2008, with the first retail buildings, including the new John Lewis department store and car park, to be completed in 2011.
