LITTER LOUTS FINED £150
Sheffield City Council's Environmental Enforcement Team has had four successes in their fight against litter in the City in recent Magistrates' Court hearings.
Litterbugs Katie Kalid (23) of Longley Avenue West and Emma Gite(30) of Follett Road, Shiregreen, John Holland (51) of Greengate Lane, High Green and Lucy Cohen (23) of Thornbridge Road, were all found guilty at Sheffield Magistrates' Court of dropping litter.
All the offenders were challenged after dropping litter and were issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice for £75, which had to be paid within 14 days. Despite reminders, none of them paid the penalty and as a result they were summonsed to Court. Fines of £75 were imposed on each offender. Holland and Cohen were also ordered to pay £75 costs.
Councillor Bryan Lodge, Cabinet Member for Transport and Streetscene, said "These judgements help to reinforce the message that littering is anti-social behaviour and will not be tolerated in Sheffield. Residents are telling us that they want to see tougher action over litter. Issuing fines for littering, along with the other enforcement actions being taken by the Council, will help keep Sheffield clean and tidy for residents and visitors alike."
Littering is an offence under Section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and amended by the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.
· Litter includes smoking waste (cigarette ends) and chewing gum.
· Where an offence has been committed, authorised officers can require a person to give their name and address, and it is an offence to fail to give these details or to give false details.
· The Fixed Penalty for Iittering is £75, although Sheffield City Council discounts this to £50 if the penalty is paid within 10 days.
· Any Fixed Penalty Notices that are not paid are referred to the Council's litigation solicitor.
In the Council's 2006 ‘Your Council Your Say" we asked people:
‘As part of our work to keep Sheffield's streets clean, we fine people £75 for dropping litter. Should we put any extra resources we have for street cleansing into:
- More education campaigns to encourage people not to drop litter? (16%)
- More clean-ups across the city? (41%)
- Taking tougher action against people who drop litter? (43%)
