The newly-named 'Staffordshire Apprentice of the Year' is a Tamworth & Lichfield College student who went on to take over the company he worked for!
Twenty years old Chris Sharrard of Great Wyrley, Walsall, was awarded the accolade by Staffordshire Providers Association in association with the Learning & Skills Council. He was chosen by the judges for displaying exceptional achievements including commitment to his personal development through learning, his ability to overcome problems and barriers, and his inspirational qualities. He also won a second award for 'Personal Achievement'.
Nikki Jones, Head of Business Innovation at Tamworth & Lichfield College praised Chris for his determination and for the excellent progress he had made since joining the college in 2003. "He started with us on an electrical course at only 16 and with very little electrical knowledge but has gone on to conquer every challenge put in front of him and in 2006, actually took over the electrical company he was working for.
"He is now a confident and extremely competent businessman and a real role model for our learners here at the college. We are all extremely proud of him and wish him continued success in the future."
The College is also celebrating the success of hairdresser student Richard Morrall of Rugeley who also received an 'Apprenticeship Award' after being recognised for his hard work and achievements.
"Richard is another of our students who has combined a natural ability with a very focused approach to achieve his goals. He has been a continual inspiration to his peers and a rewarding trainee for his tutors, who voted him Student of the Year. He is now going to undertake an Advanced Apprenticeship and is highly regarded by his employers at Obsession Salon & Spa Group in Lichfield," said Nikki Jones.
"Everyone at the college is thrilled to see our students do so well, and we are pleased to be able to continue with our run of winning entrants in this event. Last year college student Adam Faunch was the runner up to Apprentice of the Year and in 2005, student Jodi Ulliott won the title."
Tamworth & Lichfield College will be offering a comprehensive range of Apprenticeships programmes in 2007/08, some of which will be delivered totally on company premises. New additions include Customer Service, IT, Warehousing and Distribution, Team Leading and Catering. Anyone interested is invited to contact the college on 01827 310202.
