Stepping Out In Style

A team from AboutMyArea stepped out in style on Saturday night to help raise money for St.Giles Hospice. The team of 5 walkers and 2 volunteers were involved in the St.Giles Solstice Walk which started at 10pm on Saturday night.
The all female event had been organised by the St Giles fundraising team and saw hundreds of women, mostly dressed in their pyjama's pounding the streets of Lichfield. The 12-mile walk started at Friary Grange Leisure Centre, where there was pre-walk entertainment, including an aerobics warm-up and a balloon-release.
Two of the AboutMyArea team had volunteered their services as marshals and did a valiant job directing the walker's en-route. Five of us donned our training gear and set off for what we anticipated to be a relatively easy walk! The 12-mile route was made up of two 6-mile circuits taking in Lichfield Cathedral and parts of the city centre, before heading out of the city towards Boley Park and then along Eastern Avenue and back towards the leisure centre.
By the end of the first lap we were all feeling good and once armed with our fresh bottles of water, a banana and chocolate cereal bar (all courtesy of the refreshment stall at the half way point) we were raring to go on our second lap. With a couple of miles to go, muscles began to ache but we were determined to reach the finish line in good time.
Despite a couple of periods of light rain, the weather held out for us. The atmosphere was great and spirits remained high. As well as the excellent work done by the marshals, there was also support from people who had come out of their houses to encourage the walkers and wish them well.
The AboutMyArea team completed the 12-mile walk in 3 hours and 10 minutes and hope to have raised over £200 for St.Giles Hospice in the process. The event was thoroughly enjoyable and we'd certainly do it again in the future!
