Nicky Beere - a volunteer on the day!
The Friends of Muckley Corner Common took part in another successful work party on Saturday 1 March. The day was supervised by Tamara Kabat, Lichfield District Council's Biodiversity Officer, and Chris Martin from the Forest of Mercia.Fourteen volunteers rolled up their sleeves and collected litter from part of the site so that it will be ready for bracken treatment in the autumn. Other activities on the day included planting 39 trees and shrubs, and putting up 18 bird boxes, which the group had made.
The Forest of Mercia provided the trees and shrubs, which they had collected from local sites across the district. The plants included hawthorn, holly, oak, and even some silver birch taken from the heathland area of the Common.
John Crowe, Chair of the Friends of Muckley Corner Common, said: "We were only out for a few hours, but made such a big difference to the site. It's great how much work can be done in such a short period of time. We even found a patch of snowdrops amongst the bracken that we are going to move to a better location. Thank you to everyone who helped on the day, and to Collis' Timber Yard in Chase Town who donated the wood so we could make the bird boxes."
Tamara Kabat, Lichfield District Council's Biodiversity Officer added: "These work parties really help the future of the site and I'd like to thank all the volunteers who gave up some of their weekend to make a difference to their local patch."
This winter The Forest of Mercia, along with the friends group and Lichfield District Council's Countryside team, will be planting over 1,500 trees and shrubs on 1.8 hectares of the Common. This is thanks to a successful English Woodland Grant Scheme application of over £5,000.
The next Friends of Muckley Corner Common meeting is on Thursday 10 April at the Wall Village Hall from 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome. The group is particularly looking for someone to volunteer as group's secretary. If you would like more information about the group, please contact John Crowe on 01543 371771.
