FAIRTRADE GUIDE LAUNCHED
| Published: 19th May 2008 20:30 |
Lichfield's Fairtrade movement took another major step forward this week with the launch of the city's ‘Fairtrade Guide'. It's been produced by Fairtrade Lichfield and funded by both the City and District Councils. Over the coming weeks, it will be available from many shops, cafes and businesses in the city and from the Tourist Information Office at the Lichfield Garrick.
The Guide lists all shops that sell fairly traded products - from coffee, tea, fruit etc to clothing and wine. Also listed are more than fifteen local cafes and restaurants which now support Fairtrade by serving fairly traded coffee, tea and snacks.
The Guide has been launched this week by Fairtrade Lichfield's two patrons, The Very Revd Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield and Cllr Tony Thompson, former Leader of the Lichfield City Council. Adrian Dorber comments -
"There is no doubt that the Fairtrade movement has now got an established place in Lichfield. It is fantastic that so many businesses now sell Fairtrade products and that other organisations and commercial bodies are using Fairtrade items as a matter of course. Fairtrade makes a massive difference to the world's poorest people. The fair price we pay is a kind of premium for providing opportunities and hope. It's great to be part of a city that is giving Fairtrade such backing".
Whilst Cllr Tony Thompson says "I am delighted with the progress that Fairtrade Lichfield has made and the Guide shows the high level of support being given to Fairtrade by so many of Lichfield's shops and cafes. I support Fairtrade Lichfield because this is an excellent way of helping Third World producers and it provides more choice of goods in Lichfield".
Lichfield's achievement of Fairtrade City status is to be celebrated at a special Service to be held in the Cathedral at 6.00 pm on Sunday 8th June. The Chief Executive of Traidcraft, Paul Chandler, will be the preacher and pupils from local schools will contribute to the Service through music, dance and art work. Everyone is very welcome.
