Young Enterprise Honoured

Published: 13th May 2008 20:45

A group of enterprising students visited the District Council House on Thursday 8 May to tell assembled guests, including Councillor Janet Eagland, Chairman of Lichfield District Council, about their experience in the Young Enterprise Company Programme.

Young Enterprise is a business education charity. The Company Programme is designed to give students a taste of the real world, taking responsibility for their business and being accountable to their shareholders.

As part of the project, the group of eight King Edward VI year 12 boys, aged between 16 and 17 years, created their own company. They chose to launch a photography company called Shoot. During the academic year they elected a board of directors, raised share capital, and marketed and financed their company.

(Leader of Lichfield District Council).

Along with students from across Tamworth and Lichfield District, the budding entrepreneurs also took part in three tough rounds, including: a trade fair at the National Memorial Arboretum, creating a company report, and delivering a presentation at an evening event at Drayton Manor. Shoot emerged as the overall winners, gaining them a place at the County Finals, which will be held at JCB Rocester on Tuesday 13 May.

Matthew Hunter, Managing Director of Shoot, said: "Young Enterprise has shown us what life in business is all about. Although we have only been a company for a year, we have learnt so much. We sold highly successful calendars in the Lichfield Cathedral Bookshop and James Redshaw's Bookshop, and thank you to all who bought one. Hopefully we will continue, coming back next year with a new and improved calendar, so watch out for Shoot."

Councillor Janet Eagland, Chairman of Lichfield District Council, said: "Having been to both the trade fair and presentation evening, I knew how much work these students put into this project. Their achievements are extraordinary and we wanted to celebrate their creativity which is why we invited them to the Council Chamber to tell us about their experiences. On behalf of Lichfield District Council, I'd like to say well done to the group. And, based on the success of their company, I'm sure they will make wonderful businessmen of the future."
