Review of 'The Business of Murder'

Published: 5th March 2008 21:18

Todd Carty plays Detective Inspector Hallet along-side Sally Ann Mathews as Dee, a successful TV writer in ‘The Business of Murder'. Dee is having an affair with the detective and they find themselves in a precarious situation with a man called Stone, played by Aaron Bixley.

It is in fact Aaron Bixley who holds the play together. He has a huge role to fulfil as he has to deliver the copious amount of lines in an interesting way whilst linking all the sections of the plot together. On the whole he did this well. Todd Carty, however, was disappointing as the Detective. His character was almost stereotypical and un-naturalistic and he tended to have a trite set of movements which he repeated. His one liners did lighten the play but were often delivered unconvincingly. He did almost redeem himself at the end of the play with his aggressive development of his role directed at Stone.

Due to the nature of the play being a ‘murder mystery', much of the details were found within the language rather than there being an enormous amount of action. This meant that at times the play lacked pace and energy. However, in the Second Act it did mean that you were kept in suspense wanting to know how everything was going to unfold especially as the piece had many twists and turns. The audience was left with a sense of satisfaction and an unexpected climax at the end of the piece due to the clever, intricate details which were eventually all pieced together.
