POSITIVE ACTION CLOSES LICHFIELD DRUGS DEN

Published: 31st August 2007 21:57

Staffs Police BadgePOLICE and housing officials have taken action to close down a drugs den which had been set up in a flat at Lichfield.

The joint operation involved re-housing the tenant, who is a vulnerable adult, and sealing off the first floor flat at Charnwood house in the Netherstowe area of the city.

The operation involved police and staff from the Midland Heart housing association which owns the block of flats.

A 19-year old man, who had been staying at the premises, was arrested and has since been jailed. Thomas Brown was sent to prison for six months by Tamworth magistrates for a domestic related assault, burglary and failing to attend court.

The operation is one of a number of successes police have had in tackling persistent offenders in the city.

Andrew Hunt, aged 33, who was arrested at an address in Curborough Road, Lichfield, was jailed for two months on 15 August by magistrates at Burton for breach of a community order.

Simon Maskrey, aged 32 of Wood Ridings, Lichfield, appeared before magistrates at Tamworth this week (Wednesday 29 Aug), and was jailed for four months for breaching a supervision order.

Inspector Mike Kozam said he hoped the jail sentences sent out a clear message that persistent offenders would be tracked down and face positive police action.

"Many of these offences affect the very fabric of the local community with people worried about what is happening in their area," he said.

"We have responded positively to the concerns of local people and would urge anyone with information about crime in their community to contact us," he added.
