If you have an interest in British countryside and want to learn the secret of one of its defining features, its hedges, come along to a hedge laying event at Chasewater Heaths on Sunday 9th December.
Lichfield District Council's Countryside Team, alongside the Burton Conservation Volunteers are hosting a 5 hour hedge laying training session on Chasewater Heaths.
The UK's pattern of hedges and fields was established about 1,000 years ago and hedges have been a defining characteristic of our rural landscapes ever since. As well identifying boundaries, they perform a variety of important environmental functions like screening crops against bad weather, containing crops and animals and controlling soil erosion. They're also important wildlife habitats, homing at least 47 species including butterflies, birds, bats and dormice, many of which are protected in the UK.
Councillor Neil Roberts, Cabinet Member for Development Services, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for people to get their hands dirty in the great outdoors, and get a feel for the art of hedge laying. If want to learn more about the importance of hedges and learn how to lay them, book a place on this event. Tools will be provided, but don't forget to wear suitable outdoor clothing."
Places are limited so booking is essential. Please contact Denice Deverall on 01543 308183 or email denice.deverall@lichfielddc.gov.uk
