Festive Recycling

Published: 14th December 2007 20:20

Don't forget to add your leftover turkey and Christmas pudding to your brown bin this Christmas.

Lichfield District Council is reminding residents to take advantage of their recycling service this Christmas, which includes any leftover food which can now be added to brown bins.

Christmas RecyclingAt Christmas we produce a third more rubbish than at any other time of the year, which is why it is so important to step up your recycling efforts. Leftover sprouts, champagne bottles, paper-based wrapping paper and Christmas cards can all be recycled in your brown or green boxes.

Councillor Louise Flowith, Cabinet Member for Operational Services, said: "It's really important to make the most of the Council's recycling service as we all produce so much more waste at Christmas. This is the first Christmas that local people will be able to recycle food waste so I hope everybody makes an effort to add any leftovers to their brown bins. Finally, I would like to wish everyone a happy Christmas and New Year."

How to make the most of your recycling green & brown boxes:

• Before putting food waste in your brown bin, wrap it up in newspaper or kitchen towel to prevent mess or bad smells.
• Remember to recycle your wrapping paper and Christmas cards, as long as they are made of paper or card.
• Remove all plastic wrapping before putting unwanted mail into your small green box.
• Crush all plastic bottles and drink cans so you can fit even more into your big green box.
• Remember to rinse out tins, glass and plastic bottles and to remove their lids as these can't be recycled.
• Also, on the Twelfth Day, don't forget to recycle your Christmas tree - by cutting it up into sections and placing it in your brown bin.
Please note, your waste collections will continue as normal over the festive period unless your collection falls on a festive day - Christmas or Boxing Day or New Year's Day. To find out when your replacement collection will be visit www.lichfielddc.gov.uk/bincollections or call the Council on 01543 308999.

If you receive a brown bin collection on Tuesday or Wednesday and are affected by the festive season, we recommend you don't put food waste in your brown bin between 18th December and 2nd January.

A doorstep leaflet is being delivered to all residents receiving a Tuesday collection or you can check the website www.lichfielddc.gov.uk/bincollections
