News From Greysbrooke Primary School

Greysbrooke Frog

28 February 2007

Dear Parents

Welcome back after what I hope was a very enjoyable half-term for you all. Despite the fluctuating mixture of weather conditions experienced prior to half-term, I was pleased that Greysbrooke was able to remain ‘open' and the postponed Parents Evening re-allocated to last night. I hope that all parents found these consultation evenings useful and informative as a vital contributing factor to a successful home-school partnership.

Since returning to school, several internal site improvements have taken place including the replacement of the old, tiled floor in Reception class and plumbing and electrical work in the current ‘cleaners' stock cupboard ‘which will afford us opportunities for increased storage space. The Governing Body and I have also approved the replacement of some of the more ‘critical' roof sky lights as they have extended their ‘shelf-life' and leaks have become more prolific over the last twelve months. Although a costly project, these improvements are being undertaken from our ring-fenced formula capital budget and I am sure that they will encourage a more attractive learning environment during the ‘wetter' months of the year!

Please join us....

At the time of writing, the whole school is involved in a curriculum focus week which is concentrating upon ‘Science'. There has been much to celebrate already and the children are enjoying the highly interactive nature of the planned activities. Yesterday, we were fortunate to have Staffordshire's ‘Life Caravan' on site and all classes visited this facility to develop aspects of the Science curriculum. At this point, I must express thanks to Lichfield Rotary Club and FROGS who jointly-funded this visit. Several parents were able to visit the caravan and were quickly engaged in the learning opportunities that it offered our youngsters.

On Thursday 1 March (tomorrow!!) at 3.30pm there will be a display in the school hall celebrating the many achievements of this focus week. Please join us to encourage our young scientists of the future and to see a range of the activities that your children have participated in this week.

‘Who's What and What's What? - An Information Day for Parents

On Saturday 17 March there will be a general information day for parents of children with special educational needs/disabilities. It is to be held at the Kingston Centre in Stafford between 10.00am and 3.00pm. Parents are welcome to drop in to visit stands or to participate in the various workshops which will be taking place.

‘Oh dear....Oh dear....Oh dear!

I have recently been informed that Jackie is retiring in March as the co-ordinator for ‘Shenstone Carers' and that the trustees are looking to appoint a new co-ordinator. They are looking for someone to work from their own home (a dedicated phone is provided) to co-ordinate both the practical land administrative work of this local organisation. An honorarium and expenses are paid. Further details as to the work involved are available from A Toley (telephone 481103).

A Matter of Safety

I have received a complaint from Asset Travel Bus Company about several issues which are compromising the safety of our youngsters. The ‘dangers' appear to be particularly apparent at the times when the coach is trying to reverse down to the school and have included bad parking and parents even walking behind the coach with their children. Again, only a minority of parents appear to be jeopardising the safety of all children but I am receiving far too many concerns about this issue and really don't want to hear that somebody has been injured. Please act now!

Administration of Medicines

I have attached to this newsletter a summary of our policy regarding the administration of medicines at Greysbrooke School. On occasions where it is extremely difficult for parents to come into school to administer medicines, subject to my availability, I am happy to assist. However, under no circumstances should any other member of staff (including lunchtime staff) be asked to undertake this responsibility.

Assembly Group Visit

We have again welcomed the ‘Shepherd's Crook' assembly group to our school and the children thoroughly enjoyed the puppetry and animated Biblical stories. We look forward to their next visit.

Advance Notice....

Friday 16 March is Comic Relief Day and again, we would like to support this charitable event in a fun way whilst developing the children's responsibilities as local and global citizens of the future. We will be asking the children to wear items of ‘red' clothing on the day (those red school jumpers should prove helpful!) and for a £1 donation towards this worthwhile event, we will be providing the children with ‘Comic Relief' cakes and entry to the afternoon's talent contest.

The staff will be encouraging their classes to audition singularly, in pairs or small groups and the ‘three acts' who gain the maximum number of votes from each class will go forward into the afternoon's ‘Grand Final'. Don't worry children, I can assure you that nobody will have to face the likes of ‘Simon Cowell'!!

KS1 News

On Friday, Year 1 will be going out to the quad area to prepare the raised beds for planting. Please can you send your child into school with a small hand held gardening trowel with their name on it. If any parent/grandparent would like to help us on that morning, please let Miss Towers know.

KS2 News

If anyone uses 1 pint plastic milk containers could you please let Mrs Olliffe have the empties (with lids) so they can be used for orienteering markers. Thank you.

We have a large collection of lost property in KS2 - please check if your child has lost any items of uniform, etc as remaining items will be disposed of in one week's time.

FROGS NEWS

Minute Sale

The clock has now been wound and locked away in the safe - what you now need to do is to guess when it is going to stop. Then can you please ask your family and friends to do buy a minute too, and include them on your form. Forms were put in the children's bags, or you can see FROGS secretary, Georgina Jones, and buy your choice of minute! If you put your choice of minute on the form, we will allocate the closest available if someone has already bought that minute.

At the Easter assembly we'll get the clock out and one of you will be the winner of £100. The two closest runners up will get £25 each.

Quiz Night

We've had to postpone this until the autumn. Watch this space!

Bag2School

Any unwanted clothes, shoes and other fabrics can be given to us in the Blue ‘Bag2School' that was distributed last Friday, for return to school on Monday 5 March, at 8.55am. We receive 20p a kilo for all items that you put in these bags. Please check the leaflet that was distributed with the bags for the list of the items they can take.

If there isn't enough room in the blue bag for all your items, please feel free to add extra bags - such as ‘bin liner' bags.
