Between 10 am and 4.30pm on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd June The Staffordshire Regiment Museum will be holding a special event recalling Lichfield's pivotal role in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745.
The re-enactment group Lace Wars will be on site at the Museum representing Redcoats of Pulteney's 13th Foot, Cobham's 10th Dragoons, gunners of the Royal Artillery and some of the fearsome clans of the Jacobite Army. Each day will feature a battle at 3.15pm and drill displays at various times through the day including mounted displays by the dragoons at 12.15 and 2.30pm. The fist drill display will be by the Jacobite forces at 11.00am.
Derby remembers its place as the highwater mark of the Jacobite Rebellion but it was at Lichfield that the Hanoverian army of The Duke of Cumberland massed ready to turn the Jacobites back by force of arms had the Bonnie Prince Charlie's council not decided to retire to Scotland. It was from Lichfield that a spy rode out to convince the Jacobites that the army at Lichfield was but a small part of the government forces blocking their way to London and a throne for Charlie's father, pretender to the title James III.
Lace Wars includes a civilian wing called the Mannered Mob who will be laying on displays at various times in the Johnson House and the Erasmus Darwin House on both Saturday and Sunday. They will help bring these important sites of the Age of Enlightenment to life reminding people of the importance of 18th Century Lichfield not just in times of war.
Special event prices apply being: Adults £5, Families £10 (2 adults and up to 3 children over the age of 5), children under 5 free, all other concessions £2.50.
The Museum is on the A51 between Lichfield and Tamworth next to Whittington Barracks.
