15th June - Mammal Mania
| Published: 31st May 2008 15:32 |
Organised by Lichfield District Council's Countryside Team, in partnership with Staffordshire Mammal Group, this free, fun and informative event for all the family will introduce you to the different types of mammals that live at the Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Mammals, such as bank vole, wood mice and shrews, are elusive creatures that find lots of inventive ways to hide from predators and prying eyes. Quite often the only clue to a mammal's whereabouts is its tracks and trails, so come and join the experts who will help you track down and record several different species of these shy animals.
Derek Crawley, Mammal Recorder with Staffordshire Mammal Group, said: "Not only will this be a fantastic day in the great outdoors, the signs and tracks found of all the different mammals will help us to learn what animals are present at the Common. We'll be running fun activities such as making plaster casts of footprints and looking for vole tunnels in the grass."
Please remember to wear sturdy footwear and sensible outdoor clothing and to bring along a packed lunch and drink. To book your free place, please contact Lichfield District Council's Countryside Team on 01543 308183 or email denice.deverall@lichfielddc.gov.uk
This event will take place during Love Parks Week - a national campaign to raise awareness of the central role parks and green spaces play in communities across Britain.
