Celebrate International Dawn Chorus Day by taking to the great outdoors to hear early morning spring birdsong.
Lichfield District Council's Countryside Team, in partnership with Lichfield Wildlife Group and the Chasewater Wildlife Group, have organised two free dawn chorus bird walks in Lichfield District, as part of events taking place nationally and internationally for International Dawn Chorus Day.
The first walk is around Cathedral Close and the surrounding area, in Lichfield, on Wednesday 7 May from 4.30am to 6am. Led by the Lichfield Group of the RSPB, this is a great chance to watch the sun come up while listening out for wonderful birdsong and doing a spot of bird watching. There is no need to book a space on this free walk, simply turn up at the western entrance to the Cathedral at 4.30am.
The second walk is on Saturday 10 May at the Chasewater Heaths Site of Special Scientific Interest, Chasewater Country Park, from 4.30am to 6am. Led by Chasewater Wildlife Group, this is another chance appreciate early morning birdsong that many do not get a chance to hear very often. You will need to book your free place for this walk, which you can do by calling the Council's Countryside Team on 01543 308183.
Tamara Kabat, Lichfield District Council's Biodiversity Officer, said: "Getting up so early in the morning will be really worth it when you hear the spectacular dawn chorus. This is an important time of year for our birds, which are busy with the breeding season. It's also the best time of year to hear their song, so why not join thousands around the country for a truly different celebration of birds? Please remember to wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy shoes, and to bring a thermos and binoculars."
