17th November - Build a Winter Home for Lizards

Volunteers needed to build new winter homes for common lizards.
A Common LizardJoin the Countryside Team and community group volunteers to build new winter homes for common lizards at Chasewater Country Park and Muckley Corner.
Despite their name, it is quite rare to spot a common lizard at either site. Indeed, the lizards at Muckley Corner are very uncommon, so we need to do what we can to help them survive.
The day will involve digging a pit in the ground, filling it with bricks and logs, and then covering it again. This will create a roomy mound that will protect the lizards from winter frosts, so they can make it through the chilly winter. Other animals may also use the mounds, such as small mammals, newts and frogs.
The events will take pace at Chasewater Country Park on November 10th and at Muckley Corner (Wall Butts Common) on November 17th. Both events start at 10am.
Councillor Neil Roberts, Cabinet Member for Development Services, said: "Join other volunteers and spend the day digging and getting your hands dirty in the great outdoors. It should be a fun day and your work could help our lizards survive over the winter. Remember to wear outdoor clothing including sturdy footwear and gardening gloves as you will get dirty."
Places are limited, so please call the Countryside Team to book a place on 01543 308183 or email denice.deverall@lichfielddc.gov.uk.
The Muckley Corner event includes birch scrub removal and spreading heather seeds, as part of an event for the newly formed Friends of Muckley Corner Common. If you want to stay for the whole day at Muckley Corner, please remember to bring lunch and a drink.
